Understanding conversation pricing

WhatsApp Business API charges per conversation, not per message. Here's how pricing works.

How conversations are billed

A conversation is a 24-hour window of messaging between you and a customer. Within that window, you can send unlimited messages — you're only charged once.

Conversation categories

CategoryWho startsExampleCost (India)
MarketingYou (template)Promotions, offers~₹0.80
UtilityYou (template)Order updates, alerts~₹0.35
AuthenticationYou (template)OTP codes~₹0.30
ServiceCustomerCustomer asks a questionFree*

*Service conversations are free in many markets (first 1,000/month).

How it works in practice

  1. Customer messages you → Service conversation opens (free)
  2. You reply within 24 hours → Still the same free service conversation
  3. 24 hours pass, you send a template → New conversation starts (charged based on template category)

Free tier

Every WhatsApp Business Account gets 1,000 free service conversations per month. After that, service conversations are charged at a lower rate.

Who pays?

  • If you're a Tech Provider customer — You add your own payment method in Meta Business Suite
  • If your provider is a Solution Partner — They handle billing and may include it in your subscription

With AIsoule, you pay Meta directly for conversation charges. AIsoule charges 0% markup on Meta rates.

Checking your spending

  1. Go to Meta Business Suite → WhatsApp Manager → Insights
  2. View conversation counts by category
  3. See estimated costs

In AIsoule, go to Analytics → Meta Analytics for conversation breakdowns.

Optimizing costs

  1. Respond within 24 hours — Keep conversations in the free service window
  2. Use Utility templates (not Marketing) for transactional messages — they're cheaper
  3. Batch communications — Send multiple messages in one conversation window
  4. Use AI auto-reply — Instant responses keep conversations in the service category
  5. Segment carefully — Only send marketing to engaged contacts (reduces wasted spend)

Pricing varies by country

Meta charges different rates per country. India is among the cheapest. US/UK/EU rates are higher.

Check current rates at Meta's pricing page.

FAQ

Q: Am I charged for messages that fail? No. You're only charged for conversations where at least one message is delivered.

Q: If a customer messages me and I reply, is that one or two conversations? One. The customer's message opens a service conversation, and your reply is within the same window.

Q: What if I send a marketing template and the customer replies? That's one marketing conversation. The customer's reply is within the same 24-hour window.
